How do you as a parent start this process?
Gaining initial information is important to establish your child’s strengths and areas of concern.  An initial phone interview is the first step.  We should have a discussion to determine if occupational therapy services are the primary need for your family. It is important that as an occupational therapist I am a good match for your family.  Next a parental questionnaire may give additional information, as well as an evaluation of their current skill levels. If a recent evaluation has been completed, we can discuss if further assessment is warranted, or if OT services can begin without additional testing.

Assessments generally take one hour, and are followed by a parent meeting.  Parent meetings are usually scheduled at a separate time when the child is not present, to allow free discussion and honor the child’s feelings and self-esteem.  If a student is older, he/she may be invited to be part of the decision making process.  Assessments include a written report and initial home programming suggestions.

If occupational therapy is recommended based on the evaluation results, then frequency of sessions is determined.  Several factors may be considered during this process.  Home programming is included in each therapy session.  Therapy sessions generally are 45 minutes to 60 minutes in length, based upon the needs and the attention span of the child.
