As an occupational therapist, the most important starting point is to have a genuine connection between your child, your family and me. The initial appointments are an opportunity for us to have a dialogue regarding your needs for your child or young adult, and what I can offer as an occupational therapist. OT often looks likes “play”, but it is directed and goal driven. Giving the client choices as to activities during therapy sessions often engages the child faster, and promotes practice of skills. Then allowing the child to take home selected activities from the office as home programming allows your family to practice more. As I have had the pleasure of working with families for several years, I had developed expertise in several areas. These include:

  • coordination with schools and outside professionals
working with children with multiple challenges, e.g. significant cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury
  • children with feeding disorders, for example transitioning children from a gastrostomy tube to oral feeding
  • use of assistive technology: finding alternative methods for children who are struggling with expressive handwriting, or activation of augmentative communication devices.
